How the tip is worked out
The tip is the bill before tax multiplied by the tip rate, rounded to the nearest cent or penny. The total is the full bill plus the tip.
| Bill before tax | 15% tip | 18% tip | 20% tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25.00 | $3.75 | $4.50 | $5.00 |
| $50.00 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 |
| $84.50 | $12.68 | $15.21 | $16.90 |
| $120.00 | $18.00 | $21.60 | $24.00 |
A quick mental check: 10% is the bill with the decimal moved one place left. Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%.
Splitting the bill fairly
The total is divided by the number of people and rounded down to the cent. Any cents left over are added one each to the first shares, so the shares always add up to the exact total. If you would rather avoid coins, round each share up to a whole dollar or pound; the extra goes to the server as part of the tip.
Check for a service charge
Some restaurants add a service charge or automatic gratuity, especially for large groups and in the UK. If your bill already includes one, you do not need to add a full tip on top.
