Touchscreen Test

Start the test and slide a finger over every square until the whole screen is shaded. Squares that stay blank point to dead zones. Place several fingers at once to see how many touches your screen tracks.

Touchscreen Test

Slide a finger over every square until the whole screen is shaded, including the edges and corners. Then place several fingers down at once to check multi-touch. Press Esc or the finish button to end. For phantom touches, run the ghost touch check and keep your hands off the screen.

Squares that stay blank after several tries can point to a dead zone. A screen protector, water or a case edge can also block touches. The browser may report fewer touch points than the hardware supports.

How to use the Touchscreen Test

  1. Open this page on the phone, tablet or touchscreen laptop you want to check and press Start touchscreen test.
  2. Slide a finger slowly over every square, including the edges and corners, until the screen is shaded.
  3. Look for squares that stay blank after several tries. Those spots may not register touch.
  4. Place two or more fingers on the screen at once and check the touch count, then press Finish test.
  5. Read the verdict. Any untouched squares are outlined on the map; press Retry missed squares to try just those.
  6. If the screen taps or scrolls by itself, run the Ghost touch check and keep your hands off the screen for 20 seconds.

What the test checks

The grid covers the whole screen. Each square you touch is shaded, and your finger leaves a line, so gaps are easy to spot. The counter at the top shows how much of the screen you have covered, how many fingers are touching right now, and the most at once.

Reading the results

  • Blank squares after several passes: a likely dead zone. Test again without a screen protector or case to rule them out.
  • Broken lines while sliding: the screen may drop touches in that area, or you moved faster than the screen samples.
  • Fewer touches than fingers: your screen or browser tracks fewer touch points. Palm rejection can also ignore large contacts.
  • Ghost lines you did not draw: phantom touches often come from moisture, a faulty charger or a damaged digitizer.

Turning the device sideways gives that orientation its own grid and coverage. Turn it back and your earlier coverage returns.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a touchscreen dead zone?

Slide a finger slowly across every square of the grid. A working screen shades each square you pass over. If a square or a strip stays blank after several careful passes, that area is likely not registering touch.

How many touches should my screen detect?

Most modern phones and tablets track at least five fingers, and many track ten. Touchscreen laptops often track ten. The browser may report fewer points than the hardware supports, so treat the number as the minimum that works in your browser.

Why do some squares not shade?

Common causes are a cracked or lifted screen protector, water or grease on the glass, a case edge pressing on the screen, a charger causing interference, or damage to the digitizer. Clean the screen, remove the protector or case, unplug the charger and test again.

How do I test for ghost touches?

Press Ghost touch check, put the device down and don't touch the screen for 20 seconds. Any touch the screen reports in that time is counted and drawn where it happened. Zero means the screen stayed quiet. Phantom touches often come from moisture, a faulty charger, a lifted screen protector or a damaged digitizer.

Why do the edge squares stay blank on my phone?

Phones use swipes from the screen edges for back, home and notifications, so the system can take those swipes before the browser sees them. Tap the edge squares, or start your swipe a little inside the edge. A thick case can also press on or cover the edges.

Can I test a used phone before buying it?

Yes. Open this page in the phone's browser, start the test and cover the whole screen. It takes about a minute and needs no app.

Is anything recorded?

No. Touch positions are drawn on the page in memory only. They are not saved, uploaded or sent to analytics.
